Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1 (10.3.5) Patch Set 4 seems to be out!

Right ahead of the weekend I came across a new PS release for WebLogic server. After I still see the 10.3.4 releases being distributed from the official download page, I guess we are a bit ahead of time and the rest of the FMW PS4 is still to be released during the day.

Ok. Here we go: download the latest win32 version or get the generic zip installer. Both container WebLogic Server 10.3.5 and the Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (11.1.1.7.2). Together with the latest Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_24-b07) and the Oracle JRockit(R) (build R28.1.3-11-141760-1.6.0_24-20110301-1429-windows-ia32,compiled mode). The documentation is also available online. Find the WebLogic documentation in a separate book. In general there is not much to see. The "what's new section" is nearly empty and I honestly don't see any breathtaking news. There is even still an old Coherence 3.6 version bundled with the download. Odd.
Looking at the WL_HOME/wlserver_10.3/bugsfixed/bugsfixed.htm you can see, that they fixed four (4) bugs ;)

10155450
EJB: A NullPointerException sometimes occurs when an EJB client performs a JNDI lookup for an EJB application that is deployed on a cluster.
10191490
Web services: Unable to attach a custom WS-policy to a JAX-RPC Web service.
10258751
JMS: A JMS Messaging Bridge fails to connect to a secure destination.
11664124
Core components: libstackdump.so is missing from the software distribution.

Nice. This could be considered as the last stable release here. Now we are all waiting for the first Java EE 6 version to come out.

  1. Markus, WLS 10.3.5 is not primarily a feature bearing release. From a WLS perspective this primarily has fixes related to improved support for Fusion Middleware and Fusion Applications.

You can read the My Oracle Support note here:
    https://support.oracle.com/CSP/main/article?cmd=show&type=NOT&id=1316076.1

"Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.5.0) and Patch Set 4 (11.1.1.5.0) offers a wide range of additional features, new certifications, Exalogic validations, performance improvements and an array of bug fixes. In addition, release 11.1.1.5.0 is the core stack for Oracle Fusion Applications. Customers are encouraged to review the new release with this document and update according to availability and business needs."

  3. I took a look at the My Oracle Support note James mentioned, https://support.oracle.com/CSP/main/article?cmd=show&type=NOT&id=1316076.1, and read the "New certifications" with interest, since we've been trying to find out for the past two months whether Oracle was going to certify WebLogic Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. The support note mentions that Oracle Linux 6 certification has been added, so I was hoping there might be something for RHEL 6 as well.

But reading the Fusion Middleware doc http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/downloads/fmw-11gr1certmatrix.xls, it is missing anything about Oracle Linux 6, even though the doc was updated May 6 for WebLogic Server 10.3.5.

I wonder whether the Fusion Middleware doc is just incompletely updated at this point, or whether the Oracle Linux 6 certification mentioned in the support note is "still to come".

  4. Jim, I see your point about the My Oracle Support knowledge base article mentioning Oracle Linux 6 support but that same information is missing in the Supported Configurations spreadsheet. I will ask the team responsible for maintaining the supported configurations for input to clarify this. Thanks, James

  6. Jim, I got the answer. The supported certifications spreadsheet is the source of truth. As you can see it was updated May 6th and is frequently adjusted when new certifications are available. The support knowledge base article was intending to communicate that it is a planned certification, but until it is finished and updated in the certification matrix, then it is not an officially supported configuration. I hope this helps! James

  7. James, thanks for the answer! Oracle Support later gave us a similar response (that the certifications spreadsheet is the reliable source). I also see that the support knowledge base article was updated a couple days later to remove the reference to Oracle Linux 6.

Do you have any idea how an Oracle customer could find out how soon Oracle is planning to certify WebLogic Server on Oracle Linux 6 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6? Our Oracle Support contact is pretty quiet on the subject.
